The Video Network with IAB presents some industry people talking about online video advertising. Again a HDSLR shoot, shame about the slightly off aspect ratio encoding or playback…

That’s why I chose Yale
Prospective undergraduate promo video for Yale University. A musical. Trying to take off High School Musical? Not sure why they made it nearly 17 minutes long though…

Flow App promo video
Seamless edit, nice motion tracking with text overlays. Obvious rolling shutter issues from the HDSLR with all those whip pans though!

Grades for Apple Color
Useful site collecting community-contribued Apple Color grades, to my eyes these produce nicer looks out of the box than the Apple-supplied “Color looks” add-on ColorFX settings. By and large a bit more subtle and more useable with a few tweaks.

5DToRGB for improved HDSLR footage ingest
It seems that the good ‘ol QuickTime is not cutting the mustard when it reads the “h264” from HDSLR cameras like the Canon EOS range and Panasonic GH range. General grunge is added when the footage is converted from the YUV (YCbCr) to RGB colour space i.e. ProRes etc.
A python script for batching GH2 conversions is available from the comments in the Vimeo video Bay to Breakers 2011 or direct link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8712060/GH2-5dtorgb-batch-v1.4.command.zip
Update: Kevin Jardin’s settings for GH2 footage conversion: ProRes 422HQ, decoding matrix 709, gamma 1.8.

Using HTML5 video tag to serve Baseline and Main profile h264 files
Michael Jones has a good tip for using the HTML5

Using Compressor to make MP4 files with the h.264 video codec
Michael Jones explains how to get Compressor to encode h.264 into a .mp4 file with the help of a custom script and x264. This is useful for HTML 5 video with Google’s Chrome browser, and might also be good for Flash playback too… http://chealion.ca/2010/09/using-compressor-to-make-better-html5-video-draft/
