Nice interactive piece made by IIB Studio (Information is Beautiful) for the BBC showing the impact of humanity on the Earth over our lifetimes, but personalised with our date of birth and height.

Google changing search results that include video thumbnails
Casey Henry (from Wistia, a video hosting company) suggests that with the apparent changes to Google search results to favour videos posted on YouTube, self-hosting is more important. (Although he would say this, with his Wistia goggles on!) He also provides some useful content strategy ideas — how do we interpret this for the Curtin environment?

Aquatilis Expedition scrolly site
What appears to be Russian researchers pitching for funding to undertake a 3-year research expedition into unexplored areas of the world’s oceans. Video and CSS / JS animation effects, combine to a smooth experience. Very nice. A bit of sound would add heaps here.

Used by the ABC for the Packer’s Road story, and maybe the recent asylum seeker story. Good to investigate.

Better live exports scrolly site
WA Farmers lobby group has commissioned a “scrolly site” communicating the live cattle export process. Interesting they used a UK web design firm, although the animation is pretty simple, and the site is not responsive. ABC Rural news story.

ABC tries online “interactive” story
ABC has published a “snowfall” style interactive story on the Australian Government’s “Soverign Borders” operation. It appears to be a pretty basic development — it’s pretty hard to top some of the other examples that have been created recently. Does this form of presenting existing stories add much?

Apple taking “stories” to the front page
Apple has embraced the move to corporate storytelling in a big way by putting their “What will your verse be?” campaign front and centre on their homepage.
Note that the experience starts with a 1min duration video, then allows the visitor to choose a story that captures their interest.
